Exploring Prince Edward Island: Canada’s Smallest Province

Canada is also made up of many small and big provinces and territories. Do you know that the smallest province in Canada is the Prince Edward Island (PEI)? It was formed by rebellious sea levels around 5000 years ago on the Maritime peninsula.

Even after being small, it is quite a popular attraction in Canada. If you are looking for attractions to explore near PEI, then do check out Green Gables, Prince Edward Island National Park, Confederation Centre of the Arts, Confederation Trail โ€“ a 473 km long trailhead, St. Dustanโ€™s Basilica Cathedral, Beaconsfield Historic House, Cavendish Beach, Cavendish Cliffs, Okanagan Valley, and Mount Logan of Gaspe Peninsula.

History of the Prince Edward Island

Do you also love to know about a placeโ€™s history before visiting? If yes, you must know about the rich history that Prince Edward Island is known for. Before European explorers set foot on our shores, Indigenous people had already established thriving communities and a deep connection to the land. Indigenous peoples had called this place home for millennia. Later, Jacques Cartier found this island in 1534, which is significant in its history.

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is one of Canadaโ€™s four Atlantic provinces. Do you have any pet names? Because PEI does. It is known as the smallest province of Canada and also the โ€œBirthplace of Confederationโ€ because the Charlottetown Conference of 1864, where discussions about the Canadian Confederation took place, was held in Charlottetown, PEI.

Location

Prince Edward Island is situated in the womb of the Gulf of St Lawrence. The Gulf of St. Lawrence results from a freshwater brook driven into the Atlantic Ocean through the St. Lawrence River, which serves as the path for multiple North American lakes.

Size and Population

Prince Edward Island has a land area of about 5,660ย kmยฒ and is surrounded by significant water across its border. The province comprises three counties โ€“ Prince County, Queens County, and Kings County. Sounds royal and exciting, right? โ€“ Visit them next time you are in Canada. Charlottetown is indeed the capital and largest city of PEI.

According to the quarterly report published by the Government of Prince Edward Island, the estimated population of Prince Edward Island as of 2023 is 175853. Just imagine the serenity and peace in such a sparsely populated province.

Government and Administration Bodies

This Canadian province is governed and administered by the Federal Government of Canada and is in the frame of a constitutional monarchy. Their primary aim is to regulate all the matters related to health, education, legislature, financial issues, and laws.

The Canadian Confederation of 1867 included the independence movement of three provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Canadian province, which was further divided into separate provinces: Ontario and Quebec. This led to an irregular change of borders and the addition of provinces and territories, making Canada the second-largest country by national land area. If your pockets are a little empty and you are moving as an immigrant to PEI, do not worryโ€”you can have a comfortable lifestyle here, as the minimum wage fixed by the Federal Government is $12.85 per hour as of 2022.

Weather Patterns

If you are visiting the PEI or choosing to immigrate to the island, knowing its weather patterns and climatic conditions is crucial to prepare yourself for the best and worst of it.

The summer season lasts for about 3.4 months, from July to the second last week of September. I love the season because it is the warmest of all, and August is the most welcoming and unclouded month of the year. The average temperature that you can expect here in summer is 19ยฐC, and the highest and lowest are 17ยฐC and 24ยฐ C, respectively.

The winter season begins in December and lasts until mid-March, with an average temperature below 2ยฐC. January has been named the coldest month, with an average temperature varying between -9.5ยฐC and 2ยฐC. Autumn is a pleasing month with adequate precipitation throughout the year.

b) Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites

c) The Great George Hotel
