You can’t explore Canada without exploring its countryside – and what better way to do it than at a campground? Port Burwell Provincial Park is an excellent choice for nature lovers, with access to the beach and some beautiful trails.
And although there are more than 5 trails, each leads to a beautiful sandy beach that’s over 2.5 km long. Port Burwell is a small town, and don’t be surprised to find some relics of the past. The Provincial Park, located on the southeastern border of Elgin County of Canada, is an ecology mixture, due to it having a lake, called Lake Erie.
How Do You Get to The Port Burwell Provincial Park?
The park is open only from mid-May to mid-October each year, and the dates do change according to weather. Popular for its sandy beach and boasting of an amazing dog beach, the park is also a bird lover’s paradise.
To head there, put this address on your GPS – 9 Wilson Lane, ON N0J1T0. From London, Ontario the park is around 50-60 km.
The closest cities are London, Brantford, Hamilton, and Kitchener from the Burwell Provincial Park. Trains are also available but if you’re looking to save money, cars are the way to go.
A Guide For Your Trip to Port Burwell Provincial Park
The park has a total of 235 campsites for now and a couple of trailer waste dump stations. For updated details, we recommend you check the Ontario Park site.
More than 200 trailers can camp in the beach parking lot. To book yours, get a day-use vehicle permit (the type is according to the owner’s respectful basis). The parking lot is inside the driftwood forest, so one has to cross the forest to reach the natural beach of Port Burwell.
To get started with camping, you need to head to your reserved spot and set up a tent. In Canada, you could get tent rents, so you don’t need to buy them on your vacation.
Once done, we recommend taking the main park map and exploring the trails. Don’t forget to take food with you, as the trails are long. Should you head to Port Burwell town, there is a marine museum and a retired Canadian 1st class submarine.
If you’re a bird lover, come to the Park during the fall season, when most of the migration happens. You can see vultures, shorebirds, raptors, waterfowl and shorebirds.
Food Options in Port Burwell
There are a few options, but we recommend going to one of these three – Simple Scoops, Izzy’s Schooners, and The Lighthouse Restaurant & Pub.
Activities
You can try fishing, boating, camping, disc golf, swimming, and kiteboarding. There is a free admission playground and theatre. The best part of Port Burwell is perhaps its simplicity and far more authentic experience of natural beach camping.
Some Tips to Help You Get the Best Experience
We do recommend that you take a fishing license first in Ontario if you’re looking to camp here. You need one to fish, and there are options aplenty here. And while this is one of the smallest prks in Ontario, it is just what the nature lover in you might want.
Do know that the best time to visit Port Burwell Park is on the August long weekend or in September. Travelers often visit mostly in the fall. If you’re looking to head out there, do know that you need to arrive between 9 am to 4 pm. Also, once parking lots are filled the door will be closed.
To reserve your spot, we recommend that you get an Advanced Daily Permit from the Ontario Park site, which helps you reserve your travel trailer up to five days of pre-allotment.
