The Canada Hustle team talked to Joshua Wood, the CEO and Founder of CJ Digital, about things that make a brunch experience enjoyable and memorable. Here is what he said:
“First, at brunch, the food is always the most important part. It’s important to have all the classics but to also have a few dishes on the menu that haven’t been tried before/are experimental.
We call this the purple cow method, where something is so different it stands out. This will help the restaurant get more social media mentions and help with making sure people keep the restaurant busy (for a better vibe).
The second most important element is the service. Service needs to be impeccable always as it can make or break a brunch.
The final element is the atmosphere, decor, and vibe of the brunch. Make sure the space is bright, classy, and full of people there to have a good time (but not to party).”

“In my career, I have had the opportunity to plan several events and weddings that revolved around brunch. It is unique to host a brunch at an event like a wedding, but it is such a lovely alternative, it also promotes a relaxing and luxurious atmosphere.
In terms of food, you need to make sure there is a variety of foods that satisfy all palettes. You need food items and confectionery that are sweet, salty, savory, and spicy.
Naturally, you will have a variety of eggs, but be sure to add toast, condiments, cakes, muffins, and pastries. Be sure to include fruits and salads, the freshness can offer a break from the rich foods that you will be serving.

We interviewed Nic Vanderbeeken, Executive Chef at Apéritif, about the elements that make a perfect brunch with great food and atmosphere enjoyable. Here is what he had to say:
“I think the foundation of a perfect brunch lies in the quality and variety of the food. I always ensure that there are options to cater to different tastes and dietary preferences.
Fresh ingredients are crucial; they elevate the flavors and create a delightful eating experience. I also love incorporating seasonal produce, as it brings a sense of freshness and novelty to the menu.
Presentation matters just as much as taste. I find that beautifully plated dishes can enhance the enjoyment of a meal. I pay attention to color, texture, and arrangement to make each dish visually appealing.
I think interactive elements, like a build-your-own omelet or waffle station, can add a fun, personalized touch to the brunch.
I believe that atmosphere plays a significant role in creating a memorable brunch experience. Comfortable seating is essential; guests should feel relaxed and at ease.
I always choose a mix of seating options, including cozy nooks and communal tables, to accommodate different group sizes and preferences.
Natural lighting is another key element. I think bright, airy spaces with plenty of natural light can create a warm and welcoming ambiance. If outdoor seating is available, I love setting up a beautiful garden or patio area where guests can enjoy their meals in a serene environment.
Music sets the mood, too. I prefer soft, upbeat background music that complements the lively yet relaxed brunch vibe. It shouldn’t be too loud; just enough to create a pleasant auditory backdrop.
I think a perfect brunch also fosters a sense of community. Shared plates and family-style servings encourage interaction and create a more intimate dining experience.
I like to design brunches that bring people together, making it not just about the food but also about connecting with others.”
