Richmond’s Pastry Scene

Richmond’s pastry culture is a beautiful blend of heritage and innovation. In areas like Church Hill and Carytown, you’ll find bakeries that have become institutions in their own right, offering tried and true recipes that have stood the test of time. And new bakers are popping up all the time, experimenting with new flavors, global techniques, and artisanal ingredients. So there’s always something new—and delicious—to discover.

Pre-Order and Delivery

As consumer habits have changed, so have the services offered by Richmond bakeries. Many shops now offer online ordering and home delivery, making it easier than ever to enjoy gourmet pastries without leaving your house.

For example, The Little Fox Bakehouse specializes in traditional French-style pastries and offers online pre-orders with free delivery in Richmond for orders over $40. Sweet Fix, a custom cake studio, operates by appointment only, so you get personalized service for each client.

And delivery platforms like Postmates and Uber Eats feature several local bakeries like WPA Southside and Mo’s Sweet Minis, so you can get your favorite pastries delivered to your door.

Top-Rated Bakeries in Richmond

Several bakeries in Richmond have a reputation not just locally but regionally. Sub Rosa Bakery in Church Hill is known for its wood-fired baked goods and freshly milled grains, creating pastries with incredible flavor and texture. And then there’s Fat Rabbit Bakery in the East End. They’re known for their rustic, handcrafted goodies, including seasonal galettes and naturally flavored cakes. In the Fan District, Sugar & Salt has been a go-to thanks to chef Sara Ayyash’s creative mini-cakes, tarts, and cookies.

Specialty Pastries

Each of Richmond’s top pastry shops has its own specialties that keep customers coming back. Fat Rabbit’s savory galettes feature seasonal vegetables wrapped in flaky pastry. At May’s Parlor, you can take part in tart-making workshops and see the techniques behind their beautiful artisan desserts.

One of the most talked-about desserts in the city is the banana toffee pie from Proper Pie Co. The place was named one of the best pie shops of the South by Southern Living.

Customer Favorites

Locals have long-standing loyalties to certain bakeries. Westhampton Pastry Shop has been around since 1952 and is beloved for its traditional recipes, including classic cakes, Danish pastries, and holiday cookies.

RVA Bakehouse is another favorite, not only for its homemade treats but also for its strong community presence and cozy vibe.

Pastry-Making Techniques

Richmond’s top bakeries pride themselves on using old-school techniques and high-quality ingredients. Sub Rosa Bakery uses freshly milled grains and a wood-fired oven to create pastries with incredible flavor and a beautifully caramelized crust.

Little Fox Bakehouse follows traditional French methods to make their buttery croissants and elegant choux pastries with meticulous attention to detail.

Seasonal and Limited-Time Pastries

Many Richmond bakeries change up their offerings seasonally to feature fresh, local ingredients and festive flavors. Fat Rabbit Bakery updates its menu with gluten-free scones and vegan pastries inspired by the produce of the season. Sugar & Salt changes up its mini-tarts, cream puffs, and other sweets every week, so each visit is a new adventure.

Pastry Shop Events

Bakeries across Richmond are also learning spaces for bakers and pastry lovers. Sweet Bites RVA offers cake decorating and cookie design classes for beginners and experienced bakers. These classes fill up fast because they’re hands-on and fun.

Eventbrite lists baking classes throughout the city, like Sourdough 101 workshops at the Lakeside Farmers’ Market.

Support Local

Supporting Richmond’s independent bakeries goes beyond enjoying a good pastry. It’s an investment in the local economy and community.

97% of Richmond’s small businesses give back to the community through donations or volunteer work, so shopping local benefits everyone.
