The Canada Hustle team talked to Sam Rock, Operations Manager at Infinity Laser Spa, about making homemade bath salts for relaxation. Here is what he said:
“Customizing homemade bath salts involves experimenting with various ingredients to achieve desired scents, textures, and therapeutic effects. Essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint are commonly used for their relaxing or invigorating properties.
Dried herbs like chamomile or rose petals can add visual appeal and enhance the fragrance. Epsom salt is a base ingredient known for its muscle-relaxing and detoxifying properties. Himalayan salt can also be incorporated for its mineral-rich composition, promoting skin health.
In creating a luxurious bathing experience, combining these ingredients in unique proportions can produce different effects. For instance, a blend of lavender essential oil and dried chamomile creates a calming bath salt perfect for winding down after a stressful day.
On the other hand, a combination of peppermint essential oil and eucalyptus leaves offers a refreshing and rejuvenating experience, ideal for mornings or post-workout relaxation.
Experimenting with various combinations allows for customization based on individual preferences and desired outcomes, ensuring a personalized and indulgent bathing ritual.”
Ingredients Required for Making a Homemade Bath Salt
Some of the ingredients are very essential for making a homemade bath sal. I mentioned them below. You can also choose and customize the ingredients according to your preference. You will need the following:
- Epsom salt, commonly known as Magnesium Sulphate,
- Coarse sea salt,
- Baking soda,
- Essential oils,
- Nourishing skin oil (optional),
- Dried flowers(optional),
- And some fun container(s)
Alex Taylor, Head of Marketing at CrownTV, talked to the Canada Hustle team about customizing homemade bath salts to suit your preferences. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
“Not only do you have the freedom to choose your preferred scents and colors, but you can also add special ingredients that provide specific benefits for your skin, muscles, and overall well-being.
One of my favorite combinations for a relaxing and detoxifying bath is Epsom salt, lavender essential oil, and dried rose petals.
The Epsom salt helps to soothe sore muscles, while the calming scent of lavender promotes relaxation. The addition of dried rose petals adds a touch of luxury to the bath experience.
For a more invigorating and energizing bath, I like to use a combination of sea salt, grapefruit essential oil, and fresh mint leaves. Sea salt is known for its detoxifying properties, while grapefruit essential oil provides a refreshing citrus scent. The mint leaves add an extra burst of freshness.
Aside from the traditional salts and essential oils, you can also experiment with different types of clays, such as bentonite or kaolin clay. These clays have been used for centuries for their detoxifying and skin-nourishing properties.
You can also add in dried herbs, like chamomile or calendula, for an extra boost of relaxation and skin hydration.”
How to Make Bath Salts?
The process of making a bath salt can be hectic at times. Make sure that you are using the right proportion of ingredients. Only then will your bath slat turn out to be according to your expectations. Here, I will be answering your query about how to make bath salts. Make sure to store it in a cool and dry place after you are done making the bath salt. Storing it in hot places might result in the bursting of the glass jar. You can use half a cup or a few tablespoons in every hot bath.
Another step to follow is to make holes in the lid of an air-tight container. Make sure to make a few holes in the lid of the glass jar or air-tight container if you are planning to store it in them. This is because, at times, the baking soda tends to cause a reaction. It, in turn, leads to the bursting of the glass jar or the air-tight container.
Here is a detailed instruction on how to make bath salt. The right proportion of ingredients to be used is also mentioned here.
Proportion of Ingredients
- Here, I took half a cup of baking soda
- Half a cup of coarse sea salt
- 3 cups of Epsom salt
- 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil per 1-2 cups of bath salts
- 2-3 tablespoons of nutrition oils. This can preferably be coconut oil or almond oil.
- 3-4 tablespoons of dried flowers. (Optional)
We interviewed Samantha Odo, Real Estate Sales Representative and Montreal Division Manager at Precondo, on customizing homemade bath salts for personal preferences. Here is what she had to say:
“Making homemade bath salts has become a delightful hobby of mine, both for personal relaxation and as a thoughtful gift for friends and family. Over time, I’ve experimented with various combinations to find what works best for different needs.
For a truly luxurious and rejuvenating experience, I start with a base of Epsom salts for their muscle-relaxing properties. Then, I add Himalayan pink salt, which is rich in minerals and adds a touch of elegance to the mix.
To create a calming and soothing effect, I include dried lavender buds and a few drops of lavender essential oil. This combination not only smells divine but also helps promote relaxation and stress relief.
For a more invigorating blend, especially during the winter months, I mix Epsom salts with sea salt and add eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils.
Sometimes, I’ll also include dried rosemary for an extra aromatic touch. This combination is fantastic for clearing the sinuses and providing an energy boost.
I like to customize the bath salts based on the preferences of my loved ones. For instance, a friend of mine loves citrus scents, so I blend Epsom salts with dried orange peel and a mix of orange and lemon essential oils. It’s incredibly refreshing and uplifting.”
Instruction to Make Bath Salt
- I took all the ingredients in a large bowl or a mixing container.
- Then, mix all the ingredients with a spatula. Here, I used clean hands as it was easy to mix them in the correct proportion.
- When everything is over, store it in a mason jar until it is ready to use. If you do not have mason jars, you can also store them in plastic or any container that allows airflow.
- Keep it in a cool and dry place to let it set.
- Use the amount according to your preference for every hot bath.
- Indulge in the goodness of bath salts every time you bathe.
These are everything that I had to tell you about homemade bath salts. It is very easy to make and less time-consuming. The mixing took some time, but I enjoyed it as I love to make homemade gifts. There is a lot of room for experimenting, especially on your own taste. Make sure to follow these processes to indulge in a luxury bathing experience and enjoy making DIY bath salts!
