With the winters bidding goodbye, we can notice a beautiful transformation all around and Butchart Gardens is also no exception. The March comes awakening nature when every flower is ready to blossom and you can witness life glowing in the mild rays of the sun. Have you been to Butchart Gardens during the Spring Season? If not, I would say you are missing the spring vibes that you might not have experienced before.
Come with us as we explore the beautiful Butchart Gardens in the springtime.
Exploring the Beautiful Gardens There
The Sunken Garden
The Sunken Garden is a masterpiece carved out of an old limestone quarry. The best time to experience its beauty is Spring. You will notice the fresh greenery and early blooms of spring flowers all over the garden. I would suggest you to visit there in March and witness this beautiful display of colours. The bright tulips and daffodils standing out of lush greens will surely make your day.
The Rose Garden
At Butchart, the Rose Garden is a special place dedicated to these cherished flowers. As the name says, you can see the roses all around. However, March is too early for roses to bloom completely, you will still feel the excitement and fragrance. The bushes are well-trimmed and symmetrically maintained to give you a delightful experience.
Cherry Blossoms Spectacle
The cherry blossoms are a highlight of spring, synonymous with beauty and transience. The March comes with a collection of cherry blossoms, that make lovely pink and white surroundings. For me, or any nature lover, thatโs a perfect treat for the eyes. You canโt stop yourself from capturing this ethereal beauty with your camera.
Japanese Garden
If you ask me about the Japanese Garden, I would say it is an amalgamation of balance, harmony, and peace. You can witness the stones, water features, and lovely plants all around creating a serene environment. When the Spring season blooms, the garden displays azaleas and camellias adding a splash of colour. This one is always special for me as it not only creates an eye-candy pleasure but leads us on a meditative journey.
Lily of the Valley
One of the charming parts of the garden is the Lily of the Valley, that flaunts the tiny bell-shaped flowers in Spring season. These plants are refreshing to watch and associated with the return of happiness gracing the ground. The blooming of these flowers is an indication of the upcoming summer season.
Some Notable Plant Species Available in Butchart Gardens
I love the Butchart Gardens not just because I am a nature lover but also because I can find many unique flower species there. It is also a good place for students to research different types of plants. Some of the species found there in Spring are:
- Viburnum x Bodnantenseโ They start blooming in cold months or in the early spring season. The flower adds colour and fragrance to the garden during times when many other plants are in dormant stages.
- Mahonia x Media Charityโ This is an evergreen plant that usually thrives in the early spring season. You will love to see its bright yellow spikes. the colourful plant also provides a source of nectar for pollinators.
- Black Mondo Grassโ This unique grass-like plant adds a different look to the garden with its almost black foliage.
- Ophiopogon Planiscapusโ In some places it is also known as Black Mondo grass because of its certain similarities. However, it is a bit darker in shade.
- Christmas Roseโ This cup-shaped beautiful flower adds colours to the Butchart Gardens. You can see them in various shades of white, pink, purple, and green. The flower grows from winter till spring season.
Visiting Butchart Gardens in Early Spring
Butchart Gardens, is a National Historic Site of Canada. I would say that it is a must-visit location. To experience its tranquil beauty you should visit there in the Spring season at least once. This I am saying because during March you can also escape from the crowd that visits the garden in the summer season. Donโt forget to capture the hanging branches flooded with beautiful flowers to have a memorable experience.
I love nature and the best thing about the Butchart gardens is that itโs not just about plants but is also home to a variety of bird species.
The lovely voice of chirping birds mixed with the rustling of leaves is enough to mesmerize any nature lover. The experience I would say is simply heavenly.
