Toronto, the largest city in Canada, never disappoints its visitors and locals. Sure, you can find some good flavorful dishes, happening clubs, and world-class spas. But you also get a whole lot more, from cultural and historical destinations, including museums, art galleries, and theatres to lively markets, and shopping malls.
The place is also home to some of the world’s top designer stores – and if you’re looking to explore the magical streets while shopping, we have got a few recommendations.
1. Queen Street West
It is my personal favourite as it’s one of the most updated markets in Toronto in terms of fashion and technology. You will find classic boutiques and art galleries with different styles. Come here if you’re looking to shop and go to the club later.
I recommend going to Armed Jewelry if you’re looking for bold and uniquely designed pieces. If you’re more bent on designer fashion, Tusk is a great choice, featuring a great collection of local designer clothes and accessories. There is also Sydney’s, which offers branded men’s wear clothing and Logan & Finely known for its eco-friendly household and skincare and clothing. There is another store that I would want to mention Meg, which features stylish women’s apparel designed by local designers.
The Canada Hustle team talked to Alex Cornici, the Founder and CEO of The Traveler about his views on enhancing the shopping experience in a new city. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
“There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to what drives my decision-making process when I go shopping in a different city, and all contribute in their own ways to the complete experience.
For one, it is important to emphasize the selection and diversity in the stores. At the top of my list are shopping districts that have a mix of both well-known and independent boutiques.
The combination allows me to locate trendy fashion pieces and vintage finds that add a unique charm to my wardrobe and home.
Smaller independent boutiques, specifically, are a tangible manifestation of the creativity and culture of the city, often including collections from local designers and artisans.
Design/Ambiance of the Shopping Area—Very few shoppers focus on this, but for retailers, it is the most important factor. I am in favor of lively districts that give an open and hospitable feel due to the architecture, the plan, and even street art taking the wretchedness away.
A pedestrian-friendly area with space to sit outdoors, interesting cafes, and views of green spaces enhance the leisure segment of the shopping visit.
This comfortable atmosphere makes me want to spend more time wandering around, for which there are always surprise discoveries and a genuine understanding of the community.
Also essential is customer service. This is where excellent, one-on-one premium service can really help not only to increase the free walk-out ROTF but can also take buying a car out of the “suck zone,” provided they take (focusing all of their time on you) and enhance (informative conversation, not a sleep-inducing monologue) the sale.
I look for knowledgeable, friendly sales staff who want to help me find what I want. Not only that, but it is also a good service that not only makes the shopping smoother but also creates a positive lasting impression of the store and the city.”
2. Toronto Eaton Centre
Toronto Eaton Centre is where all the action happens, and is right at the heart of Downtown Toronto. This is among Canada’s best and largest shopping malls, and is beautifully designed and airy, with high-quality shops, dining, relaxing, and window-shopping facilities. There are around 240 stores for several quality products, including luxury items, women’s trendy wear, men’s clothing, kids’ specials, books, fresh groceries, shoes, and other items.
3. St. Lawrence Market
St. Lawrence Market is a public and popular spot for shopping – and food! You also have several amazing jewelry shops, maple syrup, artisan products, and gift shops. One of my favourites is the Uno Mustachio and the Carousel bakery for some good Peameal Bacon Sandwich. If you’re there, do take a look at Caviar Direct and St. Lawrence Smoke and Gift – both offering interesting gift-shopping choices. I kind of dig into the Bright Sky Jewellery store too – they have a good selection, though you could argue they do seem a bit overpriced.
4. Yorkdale Mall
The Yorkdale Mall isn’t your place to go if you’re looking to shop on a budget. Let me put it this way – this place comes in clutch if you like splurging like me on payday! The mall is the ultimate destination for branded products in North Toronto and offers all brands you can imagine, from Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, Vacheron Constantin, and Nike, to regulars like H&M, and Zara. You do have a standard food court, but if you’re looking to try out something exquisite, I recommend Tora.
5. Kensington Market
Kensington Market is one of the most vibrant and busy markets in Toronto and the world. Situated in the heart of Toronto, it has a wide stretch between College Street, Bathurst Street, Dundas Street West, and Spadina Avenue Road. It’s got some stores with character – and offers some great vintage clothing options. If you love retail therapy just as much as I do, do check out their glamorous boutiques, shoe stores, ethnic grocery stores, and vintage shops. Try heading towards Courage My Love, a staple since 1975 offering some delightful vintage finds, from jewelry pieces to beads. The other shop that deserves a mention is ‘Exile’, and your choice if you’re looking for something more DIY and punk.
But don’t take our word for it – explore on your own. The market is not just limited to clothing stores or other shops. You can dine at various restaurants, coffee shops, and bars that offer flavours from around the world.
I know that after reading this article you cannot stop yourself from shopping there. Then, what are you waiting for!! Plan your schedule and the enjoy most extravagant shopping.
In an interview with the Canada Hustle team, Amber Couron, the Owner of House Buying Heros, discusses the key factors to consider for an enhanced shopping experience in a new city. Here is what she said:
“One of the most thrilling parts of visiting a new city is discovering its shopping landscape.
Every city has its own unique charm when it comes to shopping, and as someone who loves to shop, I make sure to prioritize certain factors in choosing where to shop. First and foremost, convenience plays a crucial role in my decision-making process.
When I am pressed for time, I tend to opt for shopping centers or malls that are easily accessible and have ample parking spaces.
This allows me to save time and avoid the hassle of looking for parking spots in a crowded city. Another important factor for me is the variety of stores available.
I enjoy visiting shopping areas that offer a diverse range of stores, from high-end luxury brands to local boutiques and everything in between. This not only allows me to find unique items but also caters to different budgets and preferences.
The overall atmosphere and ambiance of a shopping area also greatly contribute to my shopping experience.
I am drawn towards areas that have a lively energy, with street performers, outdoor cafes, and vibrant decorations. This creates a fun and enjoyable shopping environment that makes me want to stay longer and explore more.
I also take into consideration the cleanliness and safety of a shopping area. A well-maintained and safe shopping location is not only visually appealing but also ensures a comfortable and secure shopping experience for me.”
