In the southwest corner of Alberta lies Waterton Lakes National Park, one of Canada’s most beautiful destinations. 505 square kilometres of rolling prairies meet the jagged peaks of the Canadian Rockies—a rare and stunning combination.
The park is part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that it shares with Montana’s Glacier National Park, symbolizing environmental preservation and cross-border friendship.
Whether you like hiking, photography, wildlife, or just soaking in nature, Waterton has a way of making you feel like you stepped into a postcard.
Planning Your Trip to Waterton
Timing is everything. The park’s high season is June to September, when most trails are snow-free and wildflowers blanket the meadows. In fact, Waterton is home to over 1,000 species of plants, making it one of the most botanically diverse places in the Rockies.
I always recommend checking the Parks Canada website before you go. Trail conditions can change quickly—one summer hike can start under blue skies and end in a mountain storm. Be prepared with layers, good boots, and a flexible plan.
For travel logistics, Waterton is a 3-hour drive from Calgary or about an hour from the US border in Montana. You can visit for a weekend, but if you want to see more than the main attractions, give yourself at least 3-4 days.
Where to Stay in Waterton
Accommodations in Waterton range from cozy cabins to lakeside hotels. One of the tourists’ favourites is Waterton Glacier Suites right in the heart of town.
Many of the hotels in the area offer more than just a place to sleep. Think guided hikes, bike rentals, and even spa treatments when your legs need a break from the trails. Whether you’re on a romantic getaway, solo adventure, or family vacation, you’ll find something that fits. But book early in summer—rooms fill up quickly, especially during festivals and long weekends.
Must-Do Outdoor Adventures
If you come to Waterton, you’re coming for the outdoors. Hiking is the main attraction, with trails ranging from the easy Linnet Lake Loop (1 km) to the challenging Crypt Lake Trail, often ranked as one of Canada’s best hikes. Crypt Lake involves a boat ride, a ladder climb, and even crawling through a rock tunnel—but the alpine lake at the end is worth every step.
For something more relaxed, rent a bike and ride the Kootenai Brown Trail, which connects the townsite to Cameron Falls. Or take to the water with a Waterton Shoreline Cruise on the historic M.V. International, where you’ll cross the border into Montana without leaving your seat.
Wildlife and Photography
Waterton is one of the few places in North America where you can see grizzly bears, black bears, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and over 250 species of birds—all in the same park.
Photographers will find endless inspiration here. Sunrise at the Prince of Wales Hotel is a must with golden light spilling over the lake and mountains. In the fall, the larch trees turn brilliant shades of yellow, adding another layer of beauty to the already stunning scenery.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
Beyond nature, Waterton has a fascinating human history. The park was established in 1895, making it Canada’s fourth national park. The townsite has a timeless charm with local cafes, galleries, and family-run shops.
The Prince of Wales Hotel, built in 1927, is a National Historic Site and a great place for afternoon tea with a view. Just walking through its grand lobby feels like stepping back in time.
How to Make the Most of Your Visit
One of my personal rules for exploring is to slow down. The same goes for Waterton. It’s easy to fill your days with hikes and sightseeing, but some of the park’s magic comes from simply sitting by the lake, watching the light change on the mountains, or enjoying a picnic with local food.
If you visit in spring or fall, you’ll find fewer crowds but just as much beauty. In fact, shoulder seasons can be perfect for wildlife spotting and getting that peaceful, almost private connection with nature.
