How to Get to Port Burwell

Getting to Port Burwell is easy. If you’re driving from London, Ontario, it’s just over an hour south. The drive is scenic and quiet as you get closer to the lake. Cyclists can also enjoy a network of trails to Port Stanley and other nearby towns. If you’re coming from farther away, public transit and rideshare options are available from larger cities.

Where to Stay

Despite being small, Port Burwell has plenty of accommodation options for every kind of traveller. Cozy B&Bs like Grey Gables offer a warm, homey experience. If you prefer sleeping under the stars, Port Burwell Provincial Park has campgrounds right on the beach. Vacation rentals – especially lakeside cottages – are also a popular choice for families and groups looking for privacy and comfort.

Port Burwell Provincial Park: The Crown Jewel

The town’s biggest draw is Port Burwell Provincial Park. 239 hectares of beach, hiking trails, birdwatching, and well-maintained campsites. Perfect for a weekend of swimming, picnicking, or even paddleboarding on the calm waters. Wildlife enthusiasts will spot frogs to bald eagles in this peaceful setting.

Top Things to See and Do

Port Burwell is more than just the beach. History buffs will want to visit the iconic Port Burwell Lighthouse, one of the oldest wooden lighthouses on the Canadian side of Lake Erie. The Marine Museum is nearby and offers insight into the town’s maritime past. Walks along Big Otter Creek and the beach boardwalk are peaceful and scenic. And if you’re in town over Labour Day, you’ll find events and fairs filling the streets with local charm.

Eat Like a Local: Fresh Perch and Sweet Treats

Food in Port Burwell is all about fresh and comfort. The town is famous for its Lake Erie perch. You’ll find it at many local diners and fish shacks. Craving something sweet? Don’t miss Broderick’s Ice Cream, a local favourite for decades. For something heartier, a few pubs and restaurants offer Canadian classics and a handful of international options.

Unique Shops and Local Finds

Shopping in Port Burwell is a slow and easy experience. Main Street is lined with small boutiques, antique shops, and craft stores. You can find hand-carved wood items, local art, and even nautical knick-knacks. During summer, the weekly farmers’ market brings in fresh produce, homemade jams, and artisanal baked goods – perfect for picnic supplies or gifts.

What’s Nearby? Day Trips and Hidden Spots

Port Burwell is a great base for day trips. Head west to Port Stanley for more beach and cafes, or check out the Elgin County Museum if you’re looking for some local history. Nature lovers can explore Big Otter Creek and its lesser-known trails and waterfalls, or visit nearby conservation areas for more secluded hiking and birding.

Festivals, Fairs, and Family Fun

Time your visit around local events and you’ll have a blast. The Port Burwell Fair in late summer has carnival rides, food stalls, and entertainment for all ages. Labour Day weekend is especially lively with parades and community celebrations that showcase small-town charm. The Lake Erie Shoreline Festival brings music, food trucks, and artists together to celebrate the best of summer.

Endless Outdoor Adventures

Whether you like kayaking down a quiet creek, birdwatching, or biking scenic routes, Port Burwell has it all. The calm shoreline is perfect for families with kids, while adventure seekers can try water sports or guided nature hikes. Volleyball courts and picnic areas near the beach make it easy to turn a day trip into a full day.

Step Back in Time with Port Burwell’s History

Port Burwell has an incredible history. Once a shipping port, it’s still evident in its preserved lighthouse, heritage buildings, and interpretive signs along the waterfront. The Marine Museum tells the story of shipbuilding, fishing, and early settlement in the area. Walking through town feels like stepping back in time – but with all the modern amenities you’d expect.

Plan Your Trip

Before you pack your bags, check the weather – summer is beautiful but can bring the odd storm. The local tourism office and the official town website have up-to-date information on park hours, event schedules, and trail maps. Booking accommodations early is a good idea, especially during holiday weekends or festival dates.

Stay Safe

Port Burwell is a quiet town with a low crime rate and a welcoming atmosphere. Emergency services are available – police, fire, and medical responders. While you’re out and about, basic precautions like locking your car and being aware of your surroundings are always a good idea.
