Where to Camp in Kelowna: Top Spots for Nature Lovers

Kelowna, British Columbia, is one of those places that was made for camping. With vineyard hills, warm summers, and Okanagan Lake, it’s no wonder over 2 million people visit the area every year. Kelowna camping trips have it all – waking up to birdsong, sipping coffee with lake views, and realizing you could easily spend a week here without missing city life. Whether you’re a tent purist or an RV road warrior, the area’s campgrounds have a mix of nature and creature comforts.

How to Choose the Perfect Spot

Choosing the right spot is all about knowing your camping style. If you want simplicity and a closer connection to nature, unserviced tent sites might be your best bet. If you prefer comfort, look for serviced RV sites with water, electricity, and hot showers.

I always check three things before booking for any camping trips: amenities (showers, picnic tables, parking), location (lakefront or forested), and real reviews from other campers. In peak season (June to August), sites fill up fast, so booking ahead isn’t optional; it’s essential.

Okanagan Lake Camping

Okanagan Lake is the crown jewel of Kelowna camping. 135 kilometers long, it’s perfect for swimming, kayaking, or just lounging on sandy beaches. Many campgrounds are right on the shoreline, giving you front row seats to sunset views that feel like nature’s own performance.

Just remember, lakefront sites are in high demand, so if you want to wake up to waves lapping at your doorstep, book months in advance.

Types of Campsites

Kelowna’s campgrounds cater to all types of campers. You’ll find:

  • Unserviced sites for those who want a minimalist, back-to-nature experience.
  • Serviced tent or RV sites with power, water, and sometimes Wi-Fi.
  • Lakeview spots that feel like a luxury cabin without the walls.

Personally, I weigh how close I want to be to the action—beaches and playgrounds are great if you’ve got kids, but for a quiet escape, the more secluded forested sites are magic.

If you’re camping by RV, Kelowna doesn’t disappoint. Many RV parks offer not just hookups but extras like laundry rooms, communal fire pits, and scheduled events. Some are steps from wineries and restaurants, so you can mix outdoor adventure with local culture.

Booking and Reservation Tips

Kelowna’s popularity means the best sites book out months ahead, especially around long weekends. Use online reservation systems to lock in your spot, and always read the fine print—cancellation policies, pet rules, and quiet hours can make or break a stay. Watch for seasonal discounts if you’re flexible; camping in late May or early September means fewer crowds and lower rates.

Know the Rules Before You Go

Every campground has its own set of rules, but most will include quiet hours, waste disposal guidelines, and restrictions on campfires during high-risk periods. Pet policies vary, so if you’re bringing your furry friend, double-check leash requirements and off-limit areas. I make it a habit to read the posted regulations when I arrive—it keeps things harmonious with neighbors and avoids awkward conversations with park staff.

Safety and Preparedness Matter

Even in a well-equipped campground, nature has its risks. Before each trip, I review safety info from the park, note the nearest first aid stations, and check the weather. Wildlife encounters aren’t common in the heart of Kelowna, but black bears and coyotes do wander near some campgrounds. Keeping food stored securely isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a necessity.

Minimize Your Impact

Kelowna’s beauty is why campers come back year after year, so we all have a responsibility to protect it. I follow a “leave no trace” approach—pack out all garbage, recycle when possible, and stick to marked trails to avoid disturbing local habitats.

Campgrounds often have recycling and compost programs, which makes it easier to do your part. Remember, small actions—like using biodegradable soap—add up when thousands of visitors pass through each summer.

Before The Trip

So many things to do and so many places to explore in Canada, and yet so little time to organize. Camping trips, sunbathing on beaches, strolls in gardens, finding new museums… the list goes on. That’s where our Canada Hustle app comes in. All your trips are now easy and fun to plan.

Available for both Android and iOS users, any place in Canada you could wish to explore is now only a few clicks away.

Endnotes

If you love the outdoors, few places combine convenience and natural beauty as well as Kelowna. From pitching a tent under the pines to parking your RV with a lake view, you’ll find a campsite to suit your style and budget.

The magic of Kelowna camping is that it offers both adventure and comfort—you can hike rugged trails in the morning, sip Okanagan wine by your campfire at night, and fall asleep under a starry sky. Whether it’s your first time here or your fifth, Kelowna’s campgrounds have a way of making you feel like you’ve found your own little slice of heaven.
