Sun, Sand, and Serenity: The Best Beaches in Ottawa for Your Summer Escape

When people think of Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, they picture historic landmarks, government buildings and museums. But when summer hits, the city becomes a hub for outdoor lovers – especially those looking for a beach day. Surprisingly, Ottawa has several great beaches along the Ottawa River and we’ve got the scoop on the best ones for you.

Top Beaches to Visit for a Perfect Day Out

Petrie Island Beach is one of Ottawa’s most popular beaches for families. Located in the east end of the city, this beach is known for its calm waters, sandy shoreline and nature rich setting. It also has supervised swimming areas, picnic tables and scenic trails for a relaxing afternoon.

Mooney’s Bay Beach is a bigger, busier beach closer to downtown. It’s a hotspot for volleyball courts, playgrounds and a lively atmosphere. It’s also home to the annual HOPE Volleyball SummerFest.

Britannia Beach is a west-end favourite located on the Ottawa River. This beach has wide open spaces, shaded picnic areas and lifeguard supervision in the summer months. The nearby Britannia Park makes it a go-to for both beachgoers and nature walkers.

Westboro Beach is smaller but a great option for a quick dip or sunset stroll. Located near trendy Westboro Village, it’s perfect for pairing beach time with shopping or dining.

How to Plan Your Ideal Beach Day in Ottawa

A little planning goes a long way. Before you head out, check Ottawa’s official beach water quality reports – updated regularly during swimming season. This ensures safe swimming conditions. Also check the weather forecast especially if you’re planning to spend the whole day outdoors.

Pack the essentials: sunscreen, towels, swimsuits, snacks, water and maybe a good book. Many beaches have free parking but arrive early on weekends or holidays when spots fill up fast. Dogs are allowed in certain areas but not always on the main beach so double check the rules if you’re bringing a furry friend.

Activities and Amenities That Make It Worth the Trip

Ottawa’s beaches offer more than just sand and water. Most have public washrooms, picnic tables, shaded areas and even BBQ spots. Mooney’s Bay has a large children’s playground and an accessible play structure. Paddleboard and kayak rentals are often available to explore the river.

Looking for more than sunbathing? Play a game of beach volleyball at Mooney’s Bay, grab an ice cream from a nearby vendor or take a stroll on the surrounding trails at Petrie Island. Britannia’s adjacent bike paths make it easy to combine a beach day with a bike ride.

Stay Safe and Swim Smart

The city of Ottawa monitors water quality at its public beaches including Petrie Island, Britannia and Mooney’s Bay. Lifeguards are on duty from mid-June to late August during posted hours. Still, follow the signs and rules – especially when swimming with kids.

Currents, sharp rocks or sudden weather changes can happen even in supervised areas. Stick to designated swim zones, keep an eye on the little ones and if you’re not a confident swimmer consider wearing a life jacket in deeper waters.

Explore More with Nearby Attractions

Your Ottawa beach day doesn’t have to end with sand in your shoes. You’ll find plenty to explore nearby. Grab a bite at local eateries near Westboro or head into downtown Ottawa for a museum visit or riverside dinner. Kitchissippi Lookout near Britannia Beach is one of the best spots in the city to watch the sunset.

Hotels or nearby vacation rentals make it easy to turn your beach trip into a weekend getaway. If you’re planning a longer stay you might also check out Holland State Park or local vineyards and heritage sites just a short drive away.

Accessibility and Inclusive Amenities

Ottawa’s beaches strive to be welcoming to all. Many have accessible washrooms, paved walkways and even beach wheelchairs – especially at more developed beaches like Britannia and Mooney’s Bay. The city is working to improve accessibility every year so people with mobility challenges can enjoy these natural spaces.

Nature in the City

If you love nature you’re in luck. Many of the beach areas are surrounded by conservation zones and parks like those around Petrie Island. These are great for birdwatching, photography or quiet moments under a tree canopy. Bring binoculars if you want to spot herons, turtles or even deer in the distance.

Festivals, Fun and Summer Vibe

Ottawa’s summer events calendar often overlaps with beach season. Mooney’s Bay is a hub for community events, cultural festivals and outdoor fitness classes. Fireworks are common around Canada Day and some beaches have movie nights or live music performances.

Plan your visit around one of these events for the ultimate summer experience. Just check the city’s event schedule in advance.
